The term nanoparticle is sometimes a bit confusing. A quick google search tells me that objects with dimensions of 1-100 nanometers are called nanoparticles (which about an 8,000th of a human hair in width). But we certainly know about elementary particles that are much smaller, and nanoparticles dont have be formed from a single particle. Basically the reason nanoparticles are important is because of their properties – in nano form can differ substantially from a larger particle of the same material and this opens up a range of new uses for that material.
