There are a few ways to do this that different scientists are using. My method is to study how the stars are moving in very young star clusters to see if that can tell us what the stars were dying at the time the star cluster formed. This is sort of like studying children to understand how people are born. We can tell a lot about how and where stars formed from what they do during the early years of their lives. For example if the stars are in small groups then they probably formed in small groups, but if they are in large groups then maybe they formed in large groups. This is all helpful to understand how stars and star clusters form. Good question, thanks for asking it!
