• Question: is the large hadron collider currently off?

      Yes, that’s right! At the moment, they’re working on upgrading it so that it will collide particles at a even higher energy.

      Yes, it is now off, which we call a shutdown. Basically this is for maintenance and upgrade, so that electronics components that failed can be replaced, and some others can be updated to the latest versions. We will start off again in early 2015, and the plan is to increase the collision energy.

      Yes, it comes back on next year after the upgrades. If you visit this year, you can go down into the tunnel and see the collider !

      Yes at the moment they’re upgrading it so that it will be better, sort of making it into a Super-Large Hadron Collider. Cool, yeah?
