Read popular science books, watch TV shows that talk about science. Try not memorise, but understand what you are taught in school, listen to your teachers, try to get good marks. Not to scare you at all, but unfortunately to do science, you will have to get into a university, and that requires good marks.
Study science at school, particularly the type of science you enjoy most. If you do the things that interest you, you won’t mind studying it, and the extra work may help you get better marks.
And don’t worry if your friends prefer other sciences or even completely different subjects, everyone is different. That’s a good thing – if everyone wanted to be the same type of scientist, there wouldn’t be enough jobs to go around!
I would suggest you go out and enjoy science! Read a science book or watch a TV documentary and find out what scientists are doing these days and what science is like. Ask us questions about what we do and we’ll answer! Then, when you know what sort of science you like the most (physics, biology, chemistry, computing) you can pick A-levels or a degree to match those and you can study more. There are lots of jobs that need scientists, and if you enjoy science you’re a scientist!
I think the most important thing is to pick what you enjoy and do lots of it! It’s also important to work hard at school, particularly in science and maths. You certainly don’t need perfect grades though! Science at school can sometimes seem like you just have to memorise a lot of facts, which is actually not what science is about at all. It’s more important to try to understand things and ask interesting questions.
Be inquisitive! Ask questions about things that interest you and really listen to understand the answers. If the person you ask doesn’t know, go find out! read books, watch science shows on the TV and explore the things you’re interested in. You have to be passionate about science to want to study something in so much detail for so long so get out there and find what you’re passionate about!
