Good question! Actually it can be almost any number. There are small star clusters that contain only a few hundred or few thousands stars, like the Pleiades cluster that you can see in the night sky even without a telescope. These clusters are usually quite young because they don’t survive for long before they break up.

The larger clusters can contain up to a few million stars and are sometimes called ‘globular clusters’. There are lots of these in the night sky, but they’re a little further away than the smaller clusters so you’re better looking at them with binoculars or a small telescope, but if you get the chance to see one I encourage you to look at them because they’re really pretty, and they’re huge as well!
