On the surface of your red blood cells are little molecules that stick out called antigens. The most important system used to say what blood group you belong to is the ABO group. This is because we call the different antigens type A, B or O (O is for none). Your genes tell you which antigen your red blood cells will have and this can be either A, B, AB or O. Being able to tell what blood type you are by testing for what antigen is on your red blood cells is very important as you can only receive specific other types of blood in blood transfusions (when you get blood in hospital, like in surgery).
