Colour is there on normal things because of the way they reflect light. So if a ball reflects more red light than blue light, the ball looks red. If it reflects more blue light than red light, it looks blue.

Particles are so small they don’t reflect light, so they can’t have colours like bigger things that do reflect light.

But even though they don’t have colours, scientists still say that particles called quarks can be red, green or blue! That sounds silly, but by pretending that quarks have colour, it makes it easier to calculate what happens when they come together.

The objects we see every day have different colours because they reflect or emit light. Particles are so small they can’t reflect light, so they don’t have colours.
