It’s great that you’re interested in doing work experience in microbiology! Maybe you could get in touch with your local university to see if they could offer you anything? Whether this will be possible and how it works will vary from university to university. It might be that you need to wait until you’re doing your A-levels, for example.

I am not a microbiologist, but I would say that just to get started, any university with a research group should do. Once you gain more experience, you can apply to more renowned places, they will love someone with some experience.

Funding is a political issue, but I believe the government is doing their best to fund science in a difficult economic time, and encourage people to do science.

A lot of universities provide opportunities for students to get experience with summer research projects, working alongside scientists who are doing real research. I suggest you contact the nearest university in your area and try to speak to someone in the microbiology department to see what opportunities they have. They might list such opportunities on their website or you could try contacting the secretary in the microbiology department.

google can be your saviour on this one as if you look up some microbiology research groups at universities and institutes you can see if they have summer placement schemes. I don’t know about microbiology specifically but the MRC definitely has a summer placement scheme. In terms of government funding, they know science is necessary but with the economy they often have to prioritise funding to successful research and even say some is more important than others which is a bit unfair, but it changes every year.

Lots of Universities have microbiology departments. You could try using google to look up some ones near you, and then email them to ask if they have any work experience places for school students. We let school pupils do work experience in our physics department, but not until they are doing A-levels. Good luck!

Generally the government is very supportive of people doing science at University. They give about 3 billion pounds every year to scientists in the UK. But although that sounds a lot, science can be expensive to do and it would always be nice to get more money from them to train more scientists!
